It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
