EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
