Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
