Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
